Road markings — solid, broken and chevron areas

Road markings both guide and oblige. Three groups to tell apart:

• Solid line — must not be straddled or crossed to change lane or overtake.
• Broken line — may be crossed when it is safe.
• Chevron (V-shaped) hatching — vehicles must not enter; a very common camera offence on expressway approach roads.

Yellow lines separate opposing directions; white lines separate lanes going the same way.
