Penalties for running a red light

From 1 January 2025 fines for disobeying traffic lights rose sharply, with licence points deducted as well.

Failing to obey traffic lights is among the offences whose fines Decree 168/2024/ND-CP raised the most, because it directly causes most junction crashes.

Key points

  • Cars face heavier fines than motorcycles for the same offence.
  • Besides the fine, licence points are deducted.
  • Amber light: stop before the stop line; carry on only if you have already crossed it or if stopping would be unsafe.
  • Where a supplementary plate allows turning right on red, you may turn but must give way to pedestrians and to traffic from other directions.
